The Rise of Kombucha

The Rise of Kombucha

We have seen plenty of things happen in 2018 but the focus of this piece is the rise of Kombucha! After all, we are all about different drinks and Kombucha is something a little more unusual that you don’t really see every day in the UK or at least you didn’t at one time.

But what do we know about Kombucha? Kombucha is a fermented drink that is usually only slightly alcoholic. Kombucha comes in many forms although it is usually a sweetened black or green tea but are people just drinking it for the taste?

Actually, no people are not drinking it just for the taste. Kombucha is a fermented tea it doesn’t really have a taste many people will find very appealing in the traditional blend anyway. The taste of traditional Kombucha is actually very vinegary and most people aren’t going to want to try a swig of vinegar are they?

Of course, there are many different flavours available now but even with those flavour isn’t the main appeal of Kombucha. So, if Kombucha as a more acquired taste then why are people drinking it and why is it seeing a rise in popularity?

The Health Benefits of Kombucha

The reason Kombucha is seeing a rise in popularity is because of its health benefits. Kombucha’s health benefits have long been reported but the issue is these health benefits aren’t exactly backed up with any scientific evidence.

Kombuchas supposed health benefits encompass a wide range of things. Some claim it can help with issues like asthma, gout, insomnia, and diabetes. But there more extreme supposed benefits which include it having the power to help prevent cancer and even treat issues like HIV and AIDS.

Other listed benefits include the ability to remove wrinkles, reverse grey hairs and fight other general signs of aging. Yes, there is a lot to consider when you look at all that but doesn’t it all sound a little too good to be true?

To be honest it does and there really isn’t a lot of scientific research to back up these supposed health benefits either. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Kombucha isn’t without merit either although I think it’s fair to say that its health merits are a little overblown.

But many people who drink Kombucha do say it makes them feel better and more energised. Kombucha drinkers highlight its effectiveness when it comes digestion in particular but many drinkers also say that it helps with generating a feeling of general wellbeing.

Some studies have also suggested (if only mildly) that drinking Kombucha could help strengthen the immune system. Kombucha does also contain beneficial probiotics as well so, while the health benefits you will usually see listed are a little OTT in my opinion that doesn’t mean Kombucha doesn’t have any health benefits at all.

In the past couple of years, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of people seeking a more healthy lifestyle. Food and drink is undoubtedly a very important part of this but reworking your diet isn’t easy which is why healthy more nutritious drinks like Kombucha are becoming more popular.

Kombucha isn’t your only choice when it comes to healthy drinks but thanks to its history and the various options for different blends it is certainly one of the most popular.

Want To Try Kombucha?

Drinking Kombucha used to be something only seen in trendy hipster restaurants and bars but thanks to its growth in popularity you now see it on drinks menus in many different establishments and bottled versions are available in shops as well. The more traditional Kombucha is usually available but you’ll see many different blends and flavours as well.

Some of the more popular choices include Kombucha with fruity tastes like strawberry and raspberry as well as flavours like ginger. Fizzy Kombucha is also a popular alternative as well so if you do want to try Kombucha you will often see many different options when it comes to flavour.

Many people do also brew their own Kombucha at home as well and there are plenty of guides online if you feel like giving it a go. Kombucha is a very historic drink which has been drunk for thousands of years and while it might not be the miracle cure some people claim it to be it does have its benefits.

There has been a sharp rise in the sales of Kombucha and this is a trend that is likely going to continue. So, if you feel like trying something new and are looking for a health-boosting beverage then Kombucha is certainly worth a try.
