Welcome to the 68th edition of The Midweek Drink, with LightDrinks’ very own amateur reviewer, Chris, reporting back with another new drink to sip and sniff for the thirsty consumer.
This has come at the right time as half term has now officially begun, which means six weeks of sunshine and spending precious moments with your children, making memories that’ll last a life time - and when it gets too much, there’s always the grandparents to fall back on to share those precious moments.
Just before I start the review, I would like to announce that Mike and myself will be at Mindful Drinking this Saturday, roaming around, seeing old and new faces. So if you’re in the area, it’ll be good to see you!
So for today’s Midweek Drink, I shall be reviewing a grapefruit wheat beer brewed by Baltika Brewery.
If anyone needs a quick recap on the brewers, then take a glance below.
A brief history of Baltika Brewery
Baltika Brewery was founded in 1990 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Six years later, the brewery had become No.1 in the Russian Market and had sold 34.6 million hectolitres of beer. In 2008, the brewery eventually became part of the International Carlsberg Group. Baltika Brewery is also considered to be the largest brewery in Europe.
Three senses and a beverage
Baltika Grapefruit Wheat Beer comes in a 300ml slim can and is alcohol-free (0.5%).
When I first cracked this beer open, I fully expected to see a hazy, orangey colour as I poured into a glass, which is quite common in wheat beers - wrong! Instead, I witnessed a hazy, lemon colour slowly filling up the glass, with a thin, white head and a very active amount of carbonation.
For the aroma, all I can really pick out from this is the grapefruit, which pretty much overpowers any of the wheat that is swirling around the glass.
But when it comes to the taste, you do begin to taste the wheat. Though may be subtle, it does give it a nice sweetness every time you go for another sip, which is then balanced out nicely with the subtle bitter aftertaste that comes from the grapefruit.
